For Specialists In Ventral Hernias Houston Is The Way To Go

By Gary Scott

The existence of weak spots or opening in abdominal organs or the abdomen itself may cause protrusion of the abdomen as organs start to stick out. Organs that stick out cause protrusion of the abdomen. Hernias can happen in any body part and they are named following the organ in which they occur. When one needs surgery to correct ventral hernias Houston should be the first location to pay a visit. Houston is home to many professionals in this field of medicine.

There are many types of ventral hernias. Some of them are inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, and incisional hernia. Incisional hernia is very common, and it occurs at sites of previous surgical procedure in the belly. It is caused by the weakness of the muscles, tissues, and skin after a surgery. In the United States alone, more than 90000 repairs of ventral hernia are carried out each year.

There are certain factors that predisposes people to this medical condition. Some of these factors are obesity, pregnancy, family history of hernias, constant heavy lifting, and injuries to the bowel region. Some people are born with a congenital defect that makes the abdominal wall to be thinner than normal. The thinness of the wall places such people at a greater risk of suffering from this disease.

It takes a long time for the condition to develop. After undergoing surgery, it may take months or years for the disorder to be fully developed. It is impossible to tell if one will develop the condition after they undergo surgery. However, the chances that the hernia will develop increases if one engage in heavy lifting before fully recovering from surgery. Therefore, it is advisable for one to take some time off to heal properly before they start doing any strenuous work.

There are several symptoms that can indicate the presence of this hernia. While some patients may have severe abdominal pains, others experience no symptoms at all. The amount of time symptoms take to manifest vary a lot, ranging from weeks to months. Some commonly experienced symptoms include bulging of the abdominal area, vomiting, pain in the abdomen, mild discomfort in abdomen, and nausea. Standing up or lifting heavy objects may make the pain worse.

Symptoms a patients experience are based on a lot to diagnose the condition. Doctors need a history of symptoms before doing a physical examination. The presence of the hernia may be confirmed through various diagnostic tests. Some of these tests are computerized tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound.

This hernia is incapable of healing by itself, which makes surgery important. One can push the tissues that are protruding back if the condition is only mild, but the hernia cavity is incapable of healing naturally. Continual protrusion may end up into strangulation. To prevent this from happening, the hernia needs to be repaired as soon as possible.

Strangulation occurs when the intestines are caught up in the hernia and blood supply to them is blocked. This may cause the intestines to start decaying if surgical intervention is not provided. Strangulation is often considered to be a medical emergency.
