Learn About Available Thyroid Disorder Care In Las Vegas

By Kurt Saniel

The thyroid gland is a large endocrine gland which has important functions in the human body. It makes proteins, determines how fast the body uses energy and controls sensitivity to other hormones within the body. When it is dysfunctional a Las Vegas Thyroid Doctor will be able to help.

It may not be functioning as it should because of a congenital anomaly. Cancer, cancerous or non-cancerous nodules, thyroiditis, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are among others. Many factors can affect this gland.

The branch of medicine that focuses on care for these disorders is endocrinology. However, an endocrinologist is not the only doctor capable of providing care for the patient with thyroid anomalies. Among the endocrinologists are those physicians who focus on diabetes and reproductive endocrinology.

An abnormal condition known as hyperthyroidism is due to an overactive thyroid gland. Metabolism can be accelerated. Other negative effects are tachycardia, unexplained weight loss and nervous irritability with no other obvious cause.

It can also have symptoms such as sweating, altered menstrual patterns, frequent bowel movements, brittle hair and thin skin. It is difficult to evaluate. Seniors may have barely noticeable or complete absence of symptoms. If they take medication containing beta blockers, any signs of hyperthyroidism may be obscured.

When someone has thyroid cancer an endocrinologist is definitely needed. There are a relatively low number of cases. That is why not all of them have a lot of experience in assessing and providing care for this condition. Although it may prove difficult, it is important to locate one with the requisite experience.

Graves disease and thyroid nodules have that same need. Someone who will need surgery for any such disorder must locate a surgeon with as much experience as possible. The pregnant woman or child who has any thyroid condition should be cared for by the doctor experienced in this field of medicine.

It is fortunate that a high number of thyroid conditions can be cared for competently by your primary care doctor. The number of qualified endocrinologists who care for rare thyroid conditions is very small. It may be because few people require that kind of care.
