By Beryl Dalton

We have a lot to thank our medical researchers and practitioners for the help and convenience that they offer us every time we feel sick. Before, access to efficient means of treatment is not that easy. If there is one, it costs a lot. Average citizens in the community who were only earning a minimum wage were not able to access these modes of treatment.

Now, there are more affordable methods. And the choices of treatment are varied. Among the vital advancement that helped a lot of people is the surgery. And while it involves some amount of pain even after the procedure, it is welcomed by the public given the high percentage of success that it can offer to a lot of condition. Surgical drain care is one mechanism used along with this procedure.

There are different types of surgery. Some of them requires the patient to put under general anesthesia while others can just be performed even while the patient is awake. Surgical drains can be used in any of these types. As long as there is a need to drain fluid from the operated area, this is often employed.

Among the most important benefits that these tools can give the patient is the prevention of certain liquids from accumulating. It is natural for an operation to have residual liquid. These have to be removed entirely to aviod infection. By using the tools, the affected area is kept dry. Also, the possible accumulation of air out of the hollow area on the operated part is prevented.

Among the most common types of operation where this tool is used is during an orthopoedic procedure. This types of operation are often associated with great blood loss so the need to keep those from splattering and infecting other materials is necessary. Pancreatic surgery which is accompanied by secretion also uses this tool.

Modes of administration on this tool can range from the open or closed, silastic or rubber or active and passive. They are all created to serve different purposes that can provide the most comfort for the patients. Prior to using it however, the surgeon has to be consulted. He or she is the one who decides what type is perfect for the situation.

Its usage has been proven to be effective. More importantly they are safe. Patients have to be aware however that there is a certain amount of pain that accompanies the removal of the material from the body. This is especially true if it is placed at an inconvenient part of the body. Pain relievers may be used but under the supervision of a nurse.

One general rule when using this is that it has to be clean. This will prevent possible infections that may occur once bacteria gets inside the wound that you have after the operation. Staff who prepare the item makes sure that the tool is well sanitized and at its best condition.

Surgeries are delicate processes. Being under the supervision of a competent physician is necessary both for the actual operation and the healing process. Be cooperative and work with your doctor well. Needless to say, pay close attention to his instructions. Failure to do so may result to some complications.
