And then the routine stored inside will then be automatically used, this is because your basal ganglia will be motivated to reach the reward of getting you to work.

The basal ganglia will not be able to recognize a habit if one thing changes on the normal routine. It will get confused and try to start a new habit. Think about it, didn t you struggle a bit to drive when you borrowed your friend s manual car than when you used your automatic one? One small change will lead you to step one of habit formation, and that is how you will change your bad habits, by making small changes.

To stop a bad habit, identify the reminder. Perhaps sad moods made you take pleasure in comfort food making you overweight.

Then confuse the basal ganglia system by making a change, instead of eating when you feel sad, exercise and form a new good habit.
