By Debra Price

In numerous instances, the necessity to give forth improved results in schools has been called for in both the United States and the rest of the world. Major stakeholders and school heads, when responding to these calls have executed strategies in enhancing the effectiveness of the process of learning. Leading instructional rounds are one of the strategies employed in attaining efficiency.

Instructional rounds is a term that refers to the process through which the learning process in schools is scrutinized. School districts and schools have adopted this method aiming to understand the process of learning and teaching in schools better. Improving learning at large is also an aim of the instructional rounds. Due to the positive impact the process has had on learning, the whole of the US has embraced the idea.

The word instructional rounds was adapted from medical rounds used in medicine schools and teaching hospitals to improve practice of current and prospective doctors. Physicians use this term a lot to improve their theory and practice. The most commonly used models in medicine includes medical interns visiting patients, residents, and supervising physicians.

Close observations are made by the group as they visit patients and they also engage them in discussions about the evidences of diagnoses available. When discussing, the available evidence is analyzed before they try to find the best option of treatment. This helps current and prospective doctors to know the finest treatment option they would use on patients if a similar situation is faced in future.

Instructional rounds comprise of a number of steps. The initial one is to develop a network of individuals that shall conduct the process. This network is supposed to comprise of a representation of all persons that have an effect on the process of learning of the students. Selection of a certain issue that the network formed shall address in the second step after network formation. The issue settled upon needs to be relevant and contemporary.

The third step involves classroom observation where a group of individuals spend time in classrooms observing the learning process. Other steps are observation debrief, detection of next steps, and finally regular repletion of this entire process. It is important to know that no criterion has been set as of now for individuals or members to be included in the networks.

Member selection is dependent of a number of factors like the specific issue being dealt with, time and what the educators prefer. Group members may either be homogenous or cross functional. There are instances where the choice of educators involved in the practice is dependent on subject a teacher teaches. In this case, the selection of the educators is conducted intentionally, while in other cases, the choice is more pragmatic.

Finally, the issue that is being dealt with in the process should be selected carefully. The issue should also be observable and current. The goal should be to make improvements on teaching. Typically, the issue should be one that has proven to require more assistance even after spending money and time in the past to resolve it.
